You can always build and manipulate off of "crap." ...Seriously, put on your favorite station, and do a 1 time, thorough categorization of your inventory for like 3 days (mine's done like how a store catalogs their departments). Then immediately file new things correctly ... Dump all "currently useless" things into a box and then take that box into your inventory for later (yeah, a bit like Russian matryoshka nesting dolls).
